The young king Yi Heon of Joseon ascends to the throne through a bloody coup. However, plagued by constant assassination threats and burdened by guilt over killing his younger brother with his own hands, he spirals into madness day by day. Yi Kyu, who once dreamed of a better world during his time as a prince, comes across Ha Sun, a jester who happens to have the exact same face as the king, while searching for a way to save Yi Heon.

Taking on the role of the fake king in place of the ailing Yi Heon, Ha Sun disregards an imperial decree to execute the rebel Yu Ho-jun, and fulfills the agreement with Queen So Woon. As Ha Sun gradually gets closer to So Woon, he narrowly escapes poisoning during a nighttime meal. Fleeing from the palace in fear, Ha Sun witnesses his younger sister being mistreated by Shin Chi-soo's son and returns to the palace in a fit of rage to seek revenge...
