JYP Entertainment's rookie group 'Stray Kids' will release their pre-debut album 'Mixtape' on January 8, 2018. 'Stray Kids' is a nine-member boy group consisting of 'Bang Chan', 'Kim Woojin', 'Lee Minho', 'Seo Changbin', 'Hwang Hyunjin', 'Han Jisung', 'Felix', 'Kim Seungmin', and 'Yang Jeongin', selected through the reality program 'Stray Kids' aired by JYP and Mnet in October 2017.
As the group name suggests, meaning 'to stray from the path', 'Stray Kids' offers a unique individuality and freedom through their music. On the show 'Stray Kids', the members were involved in various aspects of production, from songwriting to producing, concepts, and performances. They completed all five missions with self-composed songs and maintained the nine-member lineup, which was deemed the most complete combination, securing their debut.
Ahead of their official debut, 'Stray Kids' will release 'Mixtape', an album consisting of seven self-composed tracks. The album includes songs from the program 'Stray Kids', such as the title track 'Hellevator', which was also released as a digital single on November 1. Other tracks include 'Grrr Law of Totality', 'Young Wings', 'YAYAYA', 'GLOW', 'School Life', and '4419'.
'Stray Kids' successfully blend a variety of genres from electronic music to hip-hop, introducing fresh performances with every song. The title track 'Hellevator' combines 'Hell' and 'Elevator', symbolizing the group's determination to rise to the top despite the struggles and hardships. The members created a tight flow that blends the dark atmosphere and melody, adding dynamic variations to the hook in both the first and second verses.
The music video for 'Hellevator', which highlights the members' individuality and powerful performances, surpassed 13 million views on YouTube, leaving a strong impression on music fans both in Korea and internationally.
Other tracks on the 'Mixtape' album include 'Grrr Law of Totality', a hip-hop song that reinterprets teenage rebellion from a new perspective; 'Young Wings', which portrays the anxiety and fear of youth trying to act mature but afraid of actually growing up; 'YAYAYA', a powerful sound-filled track about someone dreaming of success amidst insecurity and confidence; 'GLOW', a ballad telling 'Stray Kids'' autobiographical story of chasing their dreams; 'School Life', a witty take on the repetitive and tiring life of students; and '4419', a sentimental track based on real memories of riding the bus daily with childhood friends.
With their pre-debut album 'Mixtape', 'Stray Kids' has taken their first step into the K-pop scene, packed with raw potential. As the group prepares for their full-scale debut in 2018, attention is focused on whether these nine rising stars can make a lasting impact in the industry.
