Erase Myself to Find Myself: Ha Hyun-woo's Second Solo EP [Anti ego] LP (Standard Edition)
Four years after releasing his first solo EP Ithaca, which explored dreams and ideals, Ha Hyun-woo returns with a deeper and more introspective narrative in his second solo EP Anti ego. This album delves into self-reflection and internal struggles.
The title Anti ego conveys a symbolic message that runs throughout the album, touching on the endless longing for a mythical "false self" driven by misguided desires for one's ideal identity. The album emphasizes that true understanding of others ("you") and self-reflection ("us") can only occur when one recognizes and accepts their original, unaltered self.
The album is structured in an organic way, covering the journey of self-discovery and expanding its scope to offer a prayer for everyone living in today’s world.
The title track, "My Enemy," addresses the challenges posed by misplaced self-assurance, the arrogance rooted in one's ego, and the spiritual materialism that leads to false epiphanies. The song speaks of the enemy ("jeok 敵") within, the version of oneself that one must confront and overcome to find the true self encountered at the beginning of this journey.
Another title track, "Horns," reflects on the metaphor that “we all live with a small horn,” representing self-esteem, a sword raised against a harsh world, a shield, and the expectations and love directed at us. The song highlights the emotional burden and danger of carrying this "horn," expressing the weariness of living with familiar pain and loneliness. It also speaks of the courage needed to reveal one's vulnerability and weaknesses.
Through the tracks "My Enemy" and "Horns," the album begins with the exploration of the self ("I"), and transitions into broader themes of "you" and "us" with songs like "BACK" and "Miserere."
"BACK" discusses the distance between "you" and "me," questioning how close we truly are to those we love and believe to be near. It examines the gap that exists between us, be it with loved ones, family, or even generations, as we often stand back to back, facing opposite directions.
Miserere, which translates to "have mercy," is a prayer for humanity. It reflects on the overwhelming desires, violence, indifference, neglect, and irresponsibility of the modern world, offering a final song of prayer for those left in the aftermath.
